I. Just và only cùng làm adverb (trạng từ)
1. Just/only=chỉ (trong trường hợp này cả hai có thể thay thế cho nhau). Thí dụ:
- She’s not dating John; they’re just friends=Cô ấy không phải là bạn gái của anh John. Cả hai chỉ là bạn mà thôi. (They’re friends only).
- He’s just a kid. Don’t be so hard on him. He’s only a child; nó còn bé; đừng quá khắt khe với nó.
- Do you need some help?—No, I’m just looking (I’m browsing only) (Bạn bước vào một cửa hàng, người bán hàng hỏi bạn cần gì không, bạn cho biết chỉ xem qua mặt hàng thôi).
- Just kidding=only kidding=chỉ nói đùa thôi
- The restrooms are for customers only= nhà tiêu/tiểu chỉ để cho khách dùng thôi (only=làm adverb, không thay bằng just được).
2. Just còn có nghĩa vừa mới
- What did you just say? (just=a few minutes ago, vừa mới; nghĩa này không thay bằng only được). Bạn vừa nói gì vậy?
